A native of Utah, I began violin lessons at age 3 and started teaching violin at age 11. After earning a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance and Pedagogy from BYU, I trained extensively in the Suzuki Method with Denise Willey and Deborah Moench, and in the Dorothy DeLay pedagogic approach with Monte Belknap, before teaching as a university-adjunct. Presently, I teach students of all levels, including university students, chamber ensembles, master classes, and teacher training. Patience, gentleness, and kindness are my guiding principles.
I have a well-developed, ceaselessly-honed program that I tailor to best suit each student. I've had 25 students win Music Sterling Scholar, and 20 students selected to perform in Salute to Youth Concerts. Many of my students have earned music scholarships to universities across the USA. In 2013, after five years of teaching a portion of my students online, and finding their progress equal to in-person lessons, I shifted my entire studio to online lessons only, and have taught students from as far away as Kazakhstan, France, Scotland, and New Zealand. |
As a player, I was a Music Sterling Scholar recipient, and accepted a full four-year scholarship from the BYU music department where I was a member of their Honors String Quartet, and twice toured the USA with their Honors Chamber orchestra.
At age 19, I won the Utah Advanced Violin Competition. Later highlights include being selected as concertmaster in a performance with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir under the direction of Craig Jessop, performing and recording regularly with Barlow Bradford's Utah Chamber Artists, and recording movie and television soundtracks with L.A. East Studios.
After a tenure as concertmaster and soloist with the Southwest Symphony in St. George, Utah, and being a part of numerous chamber groups, I played first violin with the Empyrean String Quartet (see below), and more recently with The Perseus Trio (see below) in Nova Scotia, Canada.
I'm grateful to have studied with many superb teachers including Nell Gotkovsky, Ralph Matson, and Cal Wiersma of the Manhattan String Quartet. In recent years, I have studied chamber music at the Chamber Music Conference of the East in Bennington, Vermont.
